Origin of the famous ‘Pad Thai’

If you ever traveled to Thailand, one of the most popular dishes that you will see on the menu in many Thai restaurants is definitely Pad Thai. It is considered a national dish that Thai people will recommend for sure if you ask them about what kind of local food you should not miss trying when you visit Thailand.

No matter if you have tried Padthai in Thailand or thinking about trying it once in your nearby Thai restaurants. Let’s get to know Pad Thai a little bit before through the story of its origin and make your meal more meaningful!

The story behind its name, Pad Thai

The origin of this dish has been around since world war II. Pad Thai was called just “stir-fried noodle” before in the past until Field Marshal Phibun Songkhram, a prime minister of Thailand back then wanted to build up nationalism in the country and also fix the problem of expensive rice by trying to convince people to eat more noodles instead.

With the intention to use more ingredients that can be found easily in the country, it ended up with an idea to create a national dish from noodles with local ingredients. This dish becomes popular throughout the country simply with its good and unique taste and people just call it Pad Thai from then till now.

Pad Thai is now a vocabulary in the oxford dictionary as “a dish from Thailand made with a type of noodles made from rice, spices, egg, vegetables and sometimes meat or seafood”. To explain a bit more about it, Pad Thai is made from rice noodle and vegetables we used are mostly sprout and spring onion.

The unique thing about Pad Thai is also the Pad Thai sauce which has 3 tastes: sour from tamarind paste, sweet from palm sugar, and salty from fish sauce. This combination just goes together so well that you cannot stop eating after you try the first bite.

You can add many kinds of meat which are pork, chicken, and seafood but the most special one is shrimp. The special local ingredients that can be added more in Pad Thai are cut chive leaves, chopped pickled turnip, tofu, roasted peanuts, and dried shrimps.

The magical moment to make this food yummy is adding fresh taste from lemon juice, sugar, fish sauce, and chili powder to create all kinds of tastes in a meal before eating it.
